How We Research
Every guide on Inside Stoop starts with one question: will this sofa work for the person who is shopping for it? That means your room, your doorways and the way you sit.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with your room
A sectional that looks great online can crowd a small room or fail to clear a narrow stairwell. A loveseat can feel tiny in a big den.
We check the overall width, depth and height, the seat depth, and the size of the largest box or piece. When your space limits the choice, we say so.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at the shape (L, U, chaise or straight), the number of seats, the frame, the cushion fill and the fabric. We also note whether the cover comes off, whether the pieces connect and what comes in the box.
Makers describe their own sofas in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms a maker lists.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read through what buyers report after living with a sofa. We look for patterns, like cushions that flatten, pieces that drift apart, fabric that pills and slow delivery.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A sofa that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell near-identical sofas in different colors under close names, so we check the model, the size and the color before we link, and we only link new units.
We skip unknown listings with no track record and any sofa with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every sofa we cover.
We don't make promises about comfort or how long a sofa will last. Those depend on your body, your household and how you use it.
